    Self-protection as an adaptive female strategy.Joyce F. Benenson, Christine E. Webb & Richard W. Wrangham - 2022 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 45:e128.
Many male traits are well explained by sexual selection theory as adaptations to mating competition and mate choice, whereas no unifying theory explains traits expressed more in females. Anne Campbell's “staying alive” theory proposed that human females produce stronger self-protective reactions than males to aggressive threats because self-protection tends to have higher fitness value for females than males. We examined whether Campbell's theory has more general applicability by considering whether human females respond with greater self-protectiveness than males to other threats (...)

    (2 other versions)Philosophy as a Feminist Spirituality and Critical Practice for Mary Astell.Simone Webb - 2020 - Metaphilosophy 51 (2-3):280-302.
The question of how gender might inflect and affect philosophy as a way of life has been somewhat neglected, as has the role of philosophical modes of living for historical female philosophers. This essay draws on Michel Foucault’s multifaceted, Hadot‐inspired conception of philosophy to show how transformative philosophical practices of the self function as feminist praxis in the work of the early modern feminist philosopher Mary Astell. Philosophy in Astell’s texts, the essay argues, is a spiritual practice of the self (...)

Identifying the determinants of emotion regulation choice: a systematic review with meta-analysis.Meghann Matthews, Thomas L. Webb, Roni Shafir, Miranda Snow & Gal Sheppes - 2021 - Cognition and Emotion 35 (6):1056-1084.
Day-to-day life is inundated with attempts to control emotions and a wealth of research has examined what strategies people use and how effective these strategies are. However, until more recently, research has often neglected more basic questions such as whether and how people choose to regulate their emotions (i.e. emotion regulation choice). In an effort to identify what we know and what we need to know, we systematically reviewed studies that examined potential determinants of whether and how people choose to (...)

  13. Motivational internalism.Christian Basil Miller - 2008 - Philosophical Studies 139 (2):233-255.
Cases involving amoralists who no longer care about the institution of morality, together with cases of depression, listlessness, and exhaustion, have posed trouble in recent years for standard formulations of motivational internalism. In response, though, internalists have been willing to adopt narrower versions of the thesis which restrict it just to the motivational lives of those agents who are said to be in some way normal, practically rational, or virtuous. My goal in this paper is to offer a new set (...)

Changing Law from Barrier to Facilitator of Opioid Overdose Prevention.Corey Davis, Damika Webb & Scott Burris - 2013 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 41 (s1):33-36.
Drug overdose has recently surpassed motor vehicle accidents to become the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The epidemic is largely driven by opioids such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, and methadone, which kill more Americans than heroin and cocaine combined. The demographics of overdose have changed over the past few decades as well: according to the latest data, the average overdose victim is now a non-Hispanic white man aged 45-54.These deaths — over 16,000 per year — are (...)

Knowledge and Attitudes of Ugandan Preservice Science and Mathematics Teachers Toward Global and Ugandan Science- and Technology-Based Problems and/or Threats.Debbie Seltzer-Kelly, Basil Tibanyendera & Michael Robinson - 2007 - Bulletin of Science, Technology and Society 27 (2):142-153.
This article reports the effects of a science, technology, and society (STS) teaching approach on the knowledge and attitudes of preservice science and mathematics teachers in Uganda toward global science and technology-based problems and/or threats. The responses of a baseline or control group (N = 50) and an experimental group (N = 50) to five questions on the preassessment indicated how little knowledge these preservice teachers had regarding these issues; however, the responses of the experimental group on the postassessment also (...)

How are Trypanosoma brucei receptors protected from host antibody‐mediated attack?Sourav Banerjee, Nicola Minshall, Helena Webb & Mark Carrington - forthcoming - Bioessays:2400053.
Trypanosoma brucei is the causal agent of African Trypanosomiasis in humans and other animals. It maintains a long‐term infection through an antigenic variation based population survival strategy. To proliferate in a mammal, T. brucei acquires iron and haem through the receptor mediated uptake of host transferrin and haptoglobin‐hemoglobin respectively. The receptors are exposed to host antibodies but this does not lead to clearance of the infection. Here we discuss how the trypanosome avoids this fate in the context of recent findings (...)

A Comparative Doxastic-Practice Epistemology of Religious Experience.Mark Owen Webb - 2014 - Cham: Imprint: Springer.
This book takes a theoretical enterprise in Christian philosophy of religion and applies it to Buddhism, thus defending Buddhism and presenting it favorably in comparison. Chapters explore how the claims of both Christianity and Theravada Buddhism rest on people's experiences, so the question as to which claimants to religious knowledge are right rests on the evidential value of those experiences. The book examines mysticism and ways to understand what goes on in religious experiences, helping us to understand whether it is (...)

Husserl and His Alter Ego Kant.Judson Webb - 2017 - In Stefania Centrone (ed.), Essays on Husserl’s Logic and Philosophy of Mathematics. Dordrecht, Netherland: Springer Verlag.
Husserl’s lifelong interest in Kant eventually becomes a preoccupation in his later years when he finds his phenomenology in competition with Neokantianism for the title of transcendental philosophy. Some issues that Husserl is concerned with in Kant are bound up with the works of Lambert. Kant believed that the role played by principles of sensibility in metaphysics should be determined by a “general phenomenology” on which Lambert had written. Kant initially believed that man is capable only of symbolic cognition, not (...)
